how to let go of perfection when home organizing

      Tidy for Peace NOT Perfection

How home organization and tidy practices can help you let go of perfection.

What spaces feels better and increases function?
      Perfection is Sneaky

Perfection is sneaky. It whispers that if we just try a little harder, buy the right bins, or keep every corner spotless, then weโ€™ll finally feel calm and in control.

But the truth is, perfection often blocks the very peace weโ€™re looking for.

Organizing invites you to slow down and actually look at your life: what you value, what youโ€™ve outgrown, and what supports the person youโ€™re becoming.

As you sort through your things, youโ€™re also sorting through expectations. You start to notice that perfect isnโ€™t the goalโ€”clarity is. Ease is. Joy is.

      Be Intentional

Letting go of perfection doesnโ€™t happen all at once. It happens in small, meaningful moments:

      • When you choose progress over procrastination.
      • When you release the guilt of unfinished projects or things you thought you โ€œshouldโ€ keep.
      • When you realize your home is allowed to look lived-in because you live in it.
      Tips for Letting Go
      1. Focus on โ€œbetter,โ€ not โ€œperfect.โ€ Aim for small improvements that make life easier. A drawer thatโ€™s 80% organized still works beautifully. Progress counts.
      2. Choose function over aesthetics. Pretty bins are great, but systems that actually support your daily habits matter more. Priority: ease, not Instagram.
      3. Use the โ€œgood enoughโ€ rule. If the space works, reduces stress, and you can find what you needโ€”stop there. โ€œGood enoughโ€ is often exactly right.
      4. Break projects into micro-tasks. Instead of โ€œorganize the closet,โ€ try โ€œsort shoes.โ€ Small wins build momentum and reduce overwhelm.
      5. Expect a little messโ€”because youโ€™re human. Life shifts. Homes get lived in. Allowing wiggle room prevents burnout and increases long-term success.
      6. Let your space evolve with you. Systems arenโ€™t set in stone. Adjust them as your lifestyle, family, or needs change. Flexibility = freedom.

Visual Gift Guide: Giving & Receiving

Dive deep with tips of how to Give, Receive, and Let go of Guilt with Gifts this 2025 holiday season.

Best Gift: Giant Pile of Love!

Nothing like a big pile of nieces and nephews to embrace this holiday season and make memories that will last a lifetime! This year I taught the kids how to make peanut butter cups!

Give Gifts of Joy this 2025 holiday season

This holiday season, shift the focus from things to moments that matter. The most meaningful gifts arenโ€™t found in storesโ€”theyโ€™re found in shared laughter, new adventures, and quiet moments spent together. Whether itโ€™s a cooking class, a day trip, or simply uninterrupted time with loved ones, experiences create memories that last far longer than any item ever could.

              Give joy, not just presents.

              Receiving Gifts

When we receive gifts, the true joy comes from the thought, time, and care behind themโ€”not the item itself. Express gratitude for the giverโ€™s intention, then reflect on whether the gift adds value or ease to your life.

Once you receive the gift, you have fulfilled its purpose.

              Let go of Guilty Gifts

You can appreciate a gift without needing to keep it forever. The love was in the giving, not the object itself. Release the guilt, thank the gift for its purpose, and let it move on to someone who will truly use and enjoy it.

Honor the person/item by passing it forwardโ€”donate it to a cause you care about so someone else can benefit. Letting go with appreciation keeps the cycle of generosity and joy alive.

              Experience Gifts from Local Professionals

What if you could release pain and increase mobility?

Monica Islas, owner of Body Wellness, is a board-certified athletic trainer practicing in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Body Wellness mission is driven by the belief that everyone, regardless of their socio-economic background, should have access to comprehensive care and knowledge to live healthier and build stronger communities.ย

What if you could give the gift of a refreshed and clean home?

Marlyn, owner of Bee Fresh Cleaners, is a husband-and-wife cleaning company for residential and commercial spaces. Theyโ€™re ISSA-certified in Professional House Cleaning (PHC) and follow health-focused cleaning protocols that target high-touch areas.

Preserving a Lifetime of Memories in Las Vegas

This month, I traveled to Las Vegas to work on a project that was as meaningful as it was memorable. My client had something truly special: boxes and albums filled with photographs spanning her entire family history. But like many families, these precious memories were stored away in closets and boxes, unseen in daily life.

Our shared vision was to bring this treasure trove of history to life in two powerful ways:

                  1. A digital family album โ€“ Every photo would be safely scanned, curated, and organized online so her family could access their story anywhere, anytime. This meant not only preserving delicate originals but also creating a resource future generations could treasure.
                  2. A family wall of photos โ€“ Together, we designed a wall display that captured the essence of her family across the decades, turning memories that once lived in boxes into a daily source of joy, pride, and connection.

Sorting through her entire familyโ€™s visual history was both practical and deeply moving. As we worked, stories came alive โ€” weddings, graduations, everyday kitchen table moments. Each chosen photo represented a thread in the tapestry of her familyโ€™s journey.

The result was transformative: an organized, accessible digital archive paired with a beautiful home display that now radiates love and legacy. What was once overwhelming and hidden away is now something her whole family can enjoy and pass down for generations.

Projects like this remind me that organizing isnโ€™t just about order โ€” itโ€™s about honoring stories, creating connection, and keeping memories alive.

From Cluttered to Clear: How to Estimate Your Organizing Time

Estimate the organizing time for your next project. Before & After photos of closet organization, kitchen organization, dining organization, office organization and garage organization projects.

                      Nicole here.

One of my favorite activities is to shop at the local farmers markets! I find I spend less, eat healthier, cook more, and feel good about supporting locals vs. corporations. Win, win right?

When I’m not thinking about food… I’m all about organizing!

Perhaps one of the most intriguing parts of my job is seeing a space and evaluating how long it will take to FINISH a project.

Every estimate and quote is based on:

                      • the size of your space
                      • amount of possessions you own
                      • type of items
                      • time it takes you to make decisions when decluttering
                      • organization approach: konmari vs. the home edit

What are the most popular projects?

                      • Clothing (Closet)
                      • Paper (Office)
                      • Komono (Kitchen)
                      • Komono (Garage)

Ready to see some examples from clients? I gotchu.

                      Clothing Project

                      Total time: 10 hours

                      • the size of your space: master bedroom closet
                      • amount of possessions: cannot walk on floor, pile about 2 feet high off floor, hangers and shelves barely used
                      • type of items: clothing, shoes, travel, linens
                      • time to make decisions: quick (not attached)
                      • organization approach: traditional (organizing by space)

For this particular project, I helped the client do a custom closet installation through The Container Store. Fun Fact: I get trade discounts from 20% – 40% off at The Container Store.

                      Office Project

                      Total time: 5 hours

                      • the size of your space: single room
                      • amount of possessions: multiple piles, many small items, floors and surfaces mostly covered, shelves filled
                      • type of items: electronics, paper, leisure gear, office supplies, sentimental items
                      • time to make decisions: quick (not attached)
                      • organization approach: traditional (organizing by space)

Quote from the clients partner after organizing, “I’ve never seen this office this clean!!” Happy partner = happy life!

                      Living & Dining Project

                      Total time: 10 hours

                      • the size of your space: kitchen, dining
                      • amount of possessions: piles on every surface/floor, cabinets mostly empty
                      • type of items: cleaning, food, eating items, cooking items, bags, appliances, leisure gear
                      • time to make decisions: quick (not attached)
                      • organization approach: traditional (organizing by space)

After we finished organizing and decluttering, we spent time to make this home feel like a home. We brought precious artwork out from storage and finally hung it on the wall. We also purchased plants and installed a custom light fixture for extra light.

                      Garage Project

                      Total time: 15 hours

                      • the size of your space: two car garage + cabinets
                      • amount of possessions: 80% of floor with piles, 50% of cabinets full
                      • type of items: home decor, tools, holiday, linens, clothing, school supplies, toys, artwork, sports equipment
                      • time to make decisions: quick (not attached)
                      • organization approach: traditional (organizing by space)

That pile in the before photo is a great representation of how overwhelming it can feel to start a project! The goal for this particular client was to help prepare them for an upcoming move.

                      Final Thoughts:

I hope from these example photos give you a realistic concept of how long projects can take. Please note: every individual is beautifully unique and so is their time to finish a project!

Instead of spending months to years to finish. I recommend scheduling intentional time. For example, setting aside time to organize 1x a week over the next month.

If it’s been over a month since you started, feel free to snap and send a few photos to me 415-787-3865. I’m happy to give tips and advice, at no charge.

                      Your clutter is my bliss.
